Everett Halvorsen

US Airforce | Art Director

Personal History

Everett Halvorsen’s goal was to become an illustrator. So, after graduation from Fort Hamilton in 1951 and after discharge from the U.S. Air Force in 1957, Everett Halvorsen entered Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY in the foundations arts program. However, after just narrowly passing the first year, Everett took his chinos and his green '55 Chevy and got a day job. He began work with IBM in 1958 and returned to Pratt in the Fall of 1959 to begin night classes in the Visual Communication department. He soon learned that becoming a painter or a commercial illustrator was not something one learns in night school. After six years of IBM Everett left to explore a world outside of the large corporation. He also left Pratt, primarily because he was practicing in real life what he was learning in school.

Mr. Halvorsen obtained various jobs as a graphic designer and art director in small and large design firms and freelanced for 3 years from 1975 to 1978. In June 1978, Mr. Halvorsen was offered the job of art directing Forbes magazine and has remained in that prestigious position ever since.

It is with a great deal of pride in one of its alumni that the Alumni Association inducts Everett Halvorsen into the Alumni Hall of Fame as a charter member.
