Personal History

William F. Calhoun graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in 1961. Upon graduation he attended the Institute of Design and Construction and completed his Associate Degree in Architectural Structure Design. In 1964 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Trained Military Police in Korea.

After his discharge in 1966 he soon was sworn in as Patrolman of the New York Police Department in 1968. He served various Patrol Precincts and was promoted to Sergeant and then Lieutenant. In 1976 he completed his BS Program at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and was awarded a magna cum laude distinction.

By 1980 he had earned his Juris Doctor Degree from Fordham University School of Law. He then continued to climb the career ladder. He was promoted in 1989 and assigned Commanding Officer of the 5th Precinct in Chinatown/Little Italy. By 1993 he was assigned to the Chief of Patrol's Office and promoted to inspector in 1995. Schooling did not stop for William. He attended the Police Management Institute at Columbia University in 1995 and was promoted to Inspector.

In 1998 he was promoted to Deputy Chief. In 2000 he was promoted to Assistant Chief and assigned as Executive Officer of the Internal Affairs Bureau. By July 2001, he became the Special Projects Chief in the Transit Bureau. His current position as of March, 2002 is the Commanding Officer of the Transit Bureau.

William F. Calhoun has distinguished himself not only in the field of education and law, but has served our city in a myriad of extraordinary positions.

He is proud of his wife Catherine of 33 years and his family. They have two lovely daughters. Sharon, the oldest, is a nurse at Lenox Hill Hospital and has blessed them with their second grandchild. Their youngest is Jennifer Anne, who is an Assistant District Attorney in Bronx County and the mother of their first granddaughter.

Chief Calhoun takes his recent position very seriously. His goal is to make the Transit System safe and secure for all that enter its domain. He is caring, dynamic, and the "Man of the City as the Top Transit Authority Cop." We are indeed proud to say he is a graduate of our school!
