Personal History

Laraine Chiano attended Fort Hamilton High School from 1958 to 1962. As a student in the Business Department and graduated with honors, she attended Long Island University on a full-tuition scholarship, graduating in 3.5 years with a degree in Business Administration. She later earned an M.S. degree in Business Administration from Hunter College and her guidance certification from L.I.U. and New York University.

Mrs. Chiano returned to Fort Hamilton in 1965 as a student-teacher of Pitman Stenography and Typing. She began teaching as a regular substitute in February 1966. She was appointed as a regular teacher in September 1967.

With her background and expertise in guidance, Mrs. Chiano was asked to fill the position of guidance counselor at Fort Hamilton in 1973. She continues to hold that important position at the school today, helping students to cope with personal and academic problems. In 1987, she was recognized for her skills as an outstanding counselor by the Brooklyn Superintendent's Office (BASIS) and received the Counselor of the Year Award.

She is in her 26th year at Fort Hamilton, where she enjoys the respect of the staff, her peers and the students.

Mrs. Chiano, who is married and the mother of two children, attributes her successful academic and professional career to the solid educational foundation she received as a student at Fort Hamilton High School.

For all of Mrs. Chiano's hard work, dedication, skill and loyalty to Fort Hamilton High School, it is an honor for the Alumni Association to induct her as a charter member into the Alumni Hall of Fame.
