Michael "Kaves" McLeer

Michael Kaves Mcleer

Michael "Kaves" McLeer is a world-renowned artist, musician, designer, and creative visionary whose career is a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring spirit of Brooklyn. A native son of the borough, McLeer has evolved from a youthful pioneer of the New York City graffiti movement into a multifaceted contemporary artist and entrepreneur.

McLeer’s artistic journey began in 1980 at the age of eleven, when he first adopted the moniker "KAVES" and left his mark on the MTA transit system. This early expression of rebellion became the foundation of a celebrated career that bridges the gap between street culture and fine art. His unique aesthetic and authentic voice have since garnered international recognition, leading to collaborations with major global brands such as Nike, Adidas, and Jaguar. He has also created original artwork for musical icons including the Beastie Boys and Metallica, as well as the 2011 Beaujolais Nouveau wine label for Georges Duboeuf.

Beyond the visual arts, McLeer is a gifted storyteller and performer. His most ambitious project to date, The Brooklyn Pop, is an 11,000-square-foot interactive exhibit that explores Brooklyn’s profound impact on global pop culture. At the heart of this installation is A Brooklyn Dream, an original immersive play written and directed by McLeer. The production weaves a multi-generational underdog story through the lens of his own life, further cementing his reputation as a guardian of New York history.

Today, McLeer continues to export his unique vision from his hometown of Bay Ridge, where he owns and operates Brooklyn Made Tattoo. His transition from the subway tunnels to the galleries and stages of the world serves as an inspiration to future generations of artists.
