Theodore (Ted) General

Journalist | Community Leader

Personal History

Theodore (Ted) General is a lifelong resident of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and has been a career civil servant with the New York City Transit Authority rising through the ranks to Director of Computer Operations. He has also been a journalist and columnist for Brooklyn's Home Reporter and Sunset News for over three decades. In his columns, he has often highlighted events, activities, personnel and students at Fort Hamilton.

Ted is currently serving as the Co-chairman of the Bay Ridge Sesquicentennial Committee which held one of their major community commemorative celebrations in the Larry Laurenzano Theatre at Fort Hamilton High School.

He received a Career Civil Service Award from the NYC business community's Hundred Year Association which was presented at City Hall by Mayor John V. Lindsay. He has attended Long Island University's College of Business Administration and has received managerial training from the American Management Association and the MTA's in-house Education and Training Division.

Ted is also the volunteer community service director of the Bay Ridge Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). Other community and civic groups he has an active role with include the Bay Ridge Consumer Federation, Annual Children's Ragamuffin Parade, the Society of Old Brooklynites and the 68th Precinct Community Council. A life member of the FHHS Alumni Association, he is also a member of the Brooklyn and Bay Ridge Historical Societies, the Knights of Columbus and is a delegate to the Bay Ridge Community Council. Two of his daughters, Teresa and Kathryn are graduates of Fort Hamilton.

He is a former director of Camp Alert Summer Naval Camp and is the past Commanding Officer of the Bluejackets Guard USA Corps of Naval Cadets (a Brooklyn based naval youth organization). General has been honored by citations for community service from the Brooklyn Borough President, the New York City Council and from the national office of the AARP. He is also a past member of the NYS Legislative Advisory Committee for the 49th Assembly District, the Managerial Employees Association of the City of New York and the Friends of the U.S. Navy Committee. While at FHHS, Jon Leder was the Principal and Ted was a member of the Track Team coached by Joe Kottman.

 

Ted General is married to the former Janet Olson and they are the parents of four children.

It is with pride and honor that we induct Ted into the Hall of Fame. He is a renowned journalist in Brooklyn and is well respected in our community.

 

Last but not least, Ted is very supportive of the Fort Hamilton High School Alumni and is an "Ambassador" of Fort Hamilton High School.
